With The Power Of Batteries, We Can All Save The Planet
Americans power up with 3 billion dry-cell batteries a year, but only one is five is rechargeable and only another 10 precent can be recycled. (Source: NH 2007)
With the incline of trash and in a throw-away society that means that more than likely those, nonrechargable batteries will end up face-up in a landfill. It’s the metals inside them that contaminate the earth and with that knowledge it’s time for change, here are some tips on battery purchasing and disposal of:
1. RECHARGE: One rechargeable battery can potentially replace hundreds of single-use batteries. It can also have 500 to 1,000 charge cycles and last a decade.
2. RECYCLE: Battery recycling keeps hazardous toxins out of the wast stream and recovers valuable materials. To find a battery recycling program in your own area vist the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation website.
3. GO SOLAR: Drop the batteries and choose devices with solar power cells built in. Or purchase a solar charger for your computer or cell phone.
4. CHOOSE A CAPACITOR: Some radios and flashlights now feature inner capacitors (the same that is used in wing-up watches) Just crank them up for a steady power stream.
