To find the toys that are the healthiest for your child and better for the environemtn, be sure and check the toys packaging for these five key words.

1. PVC-Free: Often filled with toxin emitting PVC (polyvinyl chloride), many plastics products also include a class of chemicals known to harm healthy functioning of the the hormone system.

2. FSC-Certified: When you purchase toys such as wooden blocks, puzzles or tains with a Forest Steweardship Council, certified label, you are guaranteed that the wood has been sustainably sourced.

3. Organic: snuggling up with a stuffed animal is much more soothing when the fabric is organic and 100% pesticide-free.

4. Nontoxic Paint: Most paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemicals that can cause eye irritation, headaches, and dizziness. For a toy that gets its color in a much greener way, make sure its manufacturers have used water-based or no-VOC paints.

5. Locally made: By browsing local craft fairs for handmad toys, you can support local artisans while cutting bvack on teh fuel consumption involved in shipping them.
