Microwave Zapping Safety
Microwave ovens are small but powerful enough to require extra care. Always check for the “microwave safe” label on containers and wrappers. When you follow some general rules, microwaving is perfectly safe. (Source: U.S. Dept. of Agri. Meat and Poultry)
Here are some ideas when you use the microwave on what is safe to zap:
1. Glass and ceramic containers: They withstand microwave heat, choose nonmetallic types though.
2. Paper towels: Opt for the all-white, bleach-free varieties, which contain no chemicals from colored dyes.
3. Plastic wrap: Some plastic wraps have been approved for microwave use, but low levels of chemicals can transfer to food during the process. Switch to paper towels, or loosely secure plastic wrap at a safe 1-inch above the food.
4. Plastic ware: Yogurt tubs, takeout cartons, and other one use-only type of container can warp or melt in the microwave, leaching chemicals into your food. Use more durable plastics. If heating fatty-foods opt for glass or ceramic ware.
*Note: Never microwave newspaper. The newsprint may contaminate food, and the recycled paper could harbor other harmful materials. Also never microwave aluminum foil. This is a definite fire hazard; putting foil in a microwave will cause sparks to fly.
